Press Releases
To help reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change, the UK Government has set increasing targets for the percentage of electricity generated from renewable sources. Already weve seen a major increase in the number of developers requesting connections to our electricity network. We're committed to playing our part and have been making major improvements to our existing network as well as building new lines and substations to cope with this increase in demand. Such investment ensures we are able to deal with the transmission of the power from the point of generation to the customer.
We attach great importance on the effect our works may have on the environment and surrounding communities and we continually aim to manage and reduce any impact from our investments. From the very early development of our plans we engage in environmental and technical consultation with a wide variety of stakeholders such as landowners, Local Authorities as well as many other organisations. Delivering through this approach ensures we bring to benefit to customers, employees, communities and the environment.
We deliver a huge amount of capital investment annually to modernise the networks and connect new customers. During these challenging economic times our investment remains high. Electricity supplies are being upgraded, environmental improvements are underway and long-term plans are being developed to support the future development of local communities.

RIIO T1 Business Plan
We are pleased to announce that we have submitted our detailed Business Plan to Ofgem which details the investment we will make in years 2013 to 2021 to ensure that our transmission network can provide sustainable, low carbon electricity for the UK for the foreseeable future. It highlights the absolutely key part that SP Transmission has to play in meeting UK climate change targets, and thereby facilitating the transition to a low carbon economy.
Our Plan Achieves:
- Fully justified, financeable Business Plan which delivers investment grade credit ratings
- Investment of £2-3 billion variable on timing of new connections and necessary wider system reinforcements
- Creation of up to 1,500 new, directly associated jobs in the SPT licence area
- Connection of Offshore and onshore wind generation in Scotland of around 11 GW
- Over £2 billion in reduced carbon emissions (equivalent to 45 million tonnes of CO2)
- Increase in export capacity from Scotland to England from 3.3 GW to 6.6 GW
- Generation constraint cost savings of £1.7bn by 2021 rising to £11bn by 2030
- Renewal and replacement of over 15% of our existing substation assets
- Replacement of around 800 km of overhead line
The cost of delivering these benefits will be only a 13p increase in the annual charge per UK customer.

The Western High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Link
The Western High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Link is a major electricity transmission project being jointly developed by National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission. We propose to develop a subsea HVDC cable on the western side of the UK, which will connect Scotland with England and Wales. The Western HVDC Link will provide much needed additional capacity on the Great Britain (GB) Transmission System and will support the continued growth and expansion of renewable energy as the UK works towards becoming a low-carbon economy.

Multi-Occupancy Properties
Energy Networks is investing £14.5m to provide security of supply to 14,000 customers within blocks of multi occupancy properties (otherwise known as high rise flats) in Scotland, England and Wales.
This will involve replacing ageing rising mains that distribute power to each floor of this type of property. As the rising mains were installed during the construction of the properties in the 60s and 70s they are now showing signs of age and are much more prone to faults than previously. As high rise faults are extremely time consuming and difficult to deal with this will only intensify as time progresses so we are working tirelessly to complete a replacement programme that will enhance service to our customers for many years to come.
Gordon Mackenzie from Energy Networks said “We are delighted that this significant capital investment will mean a securer supply and enhanced safety for customers. The updated equipment being installed has progressed over time and now provides even higher levels of safety and security than ever before." |

Coylton Grid Supply Point to New Cumnock Primary Substation
As part of our ongoing campaign to deliver major improvements to the electricity network. the 33kV overhead line from Coylton Grid Supply Point to New Cumnock Primary Substation is to be rebuilt.
The performance and condition of the existing line has deteriorated with age and is being replaced with 22 kilometres of new line. This new line increases the quality and security of supply for Domestic, Industrial and Commercial Customers including two windfarms at Harehill and Gallowrigg. It also provides state of the art technology for telecommunication and electrical protection purposes.
With 206 of 270 new poles erected the project is progressing well and we’re delighted that this challenging programme of works will have lasting benefit for customers, communities and the environment for many years to come. |

Snowdonia National Park Authority
SP Energy Networks and Snowdonia National Park Authority signed an agreement, which reaffirmed their commitment to working in partnership together for the benefit of the environment and the National Park. The Accord defines clear principles of how the two organisations will work together within the National Park and builds on the Accord signed by ScottishPower and the Park Authority five years ago.
