Leading the Way

Delivering a renewable future

To help reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change, the UK Government has set increasing targets for the percentage of electricity generated from renewable sources. Already we’ve seen a major increase in the number of developers requesting connections to our electricity network. We’re committed to playing our part and have been making major improvements to our existing network as well as building new lines and substations to cope with this increase in demand. Such investment ensures we are able to deal with the transmission of the power from the point of generation to the customer.

A Consultative Approach

We attach great importance on the effect our works may have on the environment and surrounding communities and we continually aim to manage and reduce any impact from our investments. From the very early development of our plans we engage in environmental and technical consultation with a wide variety of stakeholders such as landowners, Local Authorities as well as many other organisations. Delivering through this approach ensures we bring to benefit to customers, employees, communities and the environment.

Delivering for our Customers

We deliver £364m (+) of capital investment annually to modernise the networks and connect new customers. During these challenging economic times our investment remains high. Electricity supplies are being upgraded, environmental improvements are underway and long-term plans are being developed to support the future development of local communities.

Projects Connected During 2008

During 2008 we are proud to have connected 388MW of renewable generation. This equates to 876,911 tonnes of CO2 saved annually or put more simply 282,303 cars off the road.

During 2009 we expect to connect a further 500MW of renewable generation via a number of projects, some of the larger projects are:

Anglesey

A major project is ongoing to help improve the electricity supplies in Anglesey, supported by the Welsh Assembly. At present the electricity infrastructure on the island is running to almost full capacity, meaning that further major business development is limited. However, increased capacity in the electricity network through the construction of new reinforcement circuits on the island will allow businesses such as Parc Cybi development site to expand further and potentially create more jobs.

Roseburn, Edinburgh

Progress is being made with the installation of a new substation at Roseburn, Edinburgh as part of our ongoing campaign to deliver major improvements to the electricity network. The original Roseburn substation, along with the surrounding neighbourhood, has in the past been susceptible to flooding. To combat this the new substation is being constructed to a standard that will make it much less likely to be affected should flooding occur in the future.

Snowdonia
Snowdonia National Park Authority

SP Energy Networks and Snowdonia National Park Authority signed an agreement, which reaffirmed their commitment to working in partnership together for the benefit of the environment and the National Park. The Accord defines clear principles of how the two organisations will work together within the National Park and builds on the Accord signed by ScottishPower and the Park Authority five years ago.

Dalmally
Dalmally

SP Energy Networks is carrying out a major project on existing electricity lines between Dalmally and Windyhill in order to further increase the potential for renewable energy development in Kintyre and to reinforce current electricity supplies along the route.

The ambitious £15m project is taking place across some of the country's most mountainous terrain, and requires our engineers to take advice from mountain rescue teams when planning their work. It also requires mobile survival huts to provide shelter for workers should the weather conditions change suddenly. Over 50 of the electricity towers across the route can only be accessed by helicopter.

Dunbar

We have recently completed a £7m project to connect the 48MW Aikengall Windfarm to the electricity network. At the same time the installation of a new substation will improve the reliability of electricity supplies in the Dunbar area. The work was carried out over 18 months and involved laying 18km of new cables. Electricity generated by the windfarm will now be fed in to the local electricity network via the new substation at Old Belton.

Dunlaw
P Route – Two New Windfarms at Dunlaw and Toddleburn

NOW COMPLETE, this significant investment involves the refurbishment and reinforcement of a 41km existing tower line running from Galashiels to Dalkeith. Rather than construct a new line we have refurbished a line at the end of its useful life to bring it up to modern day standards. This approach permits two new windfarms at Dunlaw and Toddleburn to connect 66MW to the network - significantly reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing and installing a new tower line.

South West Scotland Renewables Project

This investment in the New Cumnock / Dalmellington / Sanquhar / Kendoon area will facilitate connection of up to ten windfarms providing potentially 800MW of new renewable energy. Throughout the project we are working closely with various environmental agencies and key stakeholders to ensure disruption to the environment and local roads is minimised at all times. Currently in planning this scheme is expected to commence in 2010 taking up to 3 years to complete.

Clyde

Situated near Crawford in South Lanarkshire, this windfarm connection will be the biggest single onshore renewable connection to date. Upon completion, this connection will help deliver 519MW of renewable generation.

Arecleoch & Markhill

Near Barrhill, South Ayrshire two new substations and a new line are being built to provide supplies to two new windfarms. As always a robust Environmental Statement was developed to ensure all key stakeholders views were carefully considered and addressed prior to construction. These developments will provide a connection for up to 249MW of renewable generation.

Investment in our Network

We cover a vast area, connecting to major power stations, managing over 92,000 substations and around 111,000km of cables.

To help us improve the performance of our network, we have an extensive investment programme currently being delivered. This involves the replacement and refurbishment of old equipment, using the latest technology to help improve the reliability of your supply.

We are committed to providing industry-leading performance for customers. We will deliver this through the efficient operation, maintenance and management of our physical assets. The attached booklets provide details of the schemes and work programmes that support our investment strategy.
